GREENING OF GREATER YOLA: Adamawa ACReSAL Tasks Banks on Collaboration
The banking sector in Adamawa has been tasked with keying into the “Greening of Greater Yola Project” being proposed by the Adamawa Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, with support from the Adamawa State Ministry of Environment. This formed the thrust of a collaborative meeting held at the ACReSAL project office today, Thursday, 11th January, 2024 in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.
The meeting which drew the top crass in banking institutions operating in the state, environmental consultants, and key staff from the finance and environment ministries, was hosted by the State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Dr Ibrahim Chinda, and chaired by the Adamawa state commissioner of environment Mohammed Sadiq.
Dr Chinda appreciated the high turnout of the stakeholders and reiterated the importance of greening. “Records show that in the past 20 years, the temperature in the greater Yola area has risen by 6 degrees! This activity seeks to see how this can be brought down through the planting of trees, shrubs, and grasses. We require your collaboration in this ambitious activity.”
A team of consultants led by Dr. Amos Badgal who had been carrying out research and design studies on the proposed greening activity, made 3D-simulated presentations on the projections for the whole “Greater Yola” area, including the 20-km superhighway and housing estate being constructed by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The honourable commissioner of environment also drove home the finer details of the greening activity by presenting a design for a city park and solicited collaboration and buy-in by financial institutions and other well-meaning organizations in a bid to enhance the environment, mitigate the effects of climate change, and build resilience for the people.
The “Greening of the Greater Yola” project, which has received the support and backing of Governor Fintiri, is one of the activities Adamawa ACReSAL is embarking on this year.
