The CrossCulture Programme (CCP), organized by ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, offers professionals and committed volunteers from more than forty countries the opportunity to participate in a fully funded fellowship program in Germany or CCP partner countries. Each year, about 55 to 60 participants are selected for two to three-month fellowships designed to enhance professional skills, foster intercultural dialogue, and strengthen civil society organizations worldwide.

The CCP Fellowship allows participants to gain practical experience by working with a host organization abroad. Fellows are placed in institutions that align with their professional background and interests, allowing them to engage in meaningful work while learning about new systems and perspectives. The 2026 CCP Fellowship will be conducted as an on-site program, although participants may be allowed to engage digitally depending on travel circumstances and individual cases. Benefits and Funding

For international participants, ifa covers all major expenses associated with the fellowship. This includes a monthly stipend of €650, round-trip airfare, accommodation, local public transportation within the host city, health insurance, and reimbursement of visa fees. For German participants traveling to partner countries, the monthly stipend is €1,200, which must cover accommodation and daily living costs. Their airfare, visa fees, and health insurance are also fully covered by ifa. Family members cannot accompany participants under this program, and the fellowship does not provide additional financial support for dependents.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 23 years old at the time of application and have a minimum of two years of professional experience or voluntary work in a civil society organization in their home country. Applicants must demonstrate a strong command of English, as it is the primary language used in workshops and communication during the fellowship. They must also be in good health and able to undertake an extended stay abroad. Students currently enrolled in degree programs are not eligible to apply.

It is highly desirable that applicants show long-term commitment to social or community development, have an existing or planned collaboration with an organization in the host country, and possess additional language skills—especially in German.

Fields of Work and Focus Areas

The CCP Fellowship supports professionals working in various areas, including policy and society, media and culture, human rights and peacebuilding, and sustainable development and climate justice. In 2026, particular emphasis will be placed on two thematic areas: “Culture of Remembrance” and “Democratic Resilience.” These focus areas aim to strengthen civic participation, historical awareness, and democratic values in societies around the world.

Application Process

The application period for the 2026 CCP Fellowships runs from 15 October to 10 December 2025. Applicants are required to submit their materials through the official online portal on the ifa website. The application must include a completed form, a curriculum vitae in English, and a letter of recommendation from a supervisor or manager in the applicant’s current organization. The recommendation must follow the template provided by CCP. A photo is optional. It is important to note that the system does not allow applicants to save drafts, so all documents should be prepared and ready for upload before starting the application process.

After submission, applicants will receive a confirmation email. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, and final selections will be made by the CCP selection board. Selected fellows will be notified by email around March or April 2026. The fellowship itself will take place between May and November 2026. Applicants who are not selected will also receive notification but will not be provided with individual feedback due to the high number of applications received each year.

The fellowship application phase will open on 15 October 2025 and close on 10 December 2025. The selection process will take place between January and April 2026. Selected fellows will be announced in March or April, with placements beginning in May and running through November 2026.
