For more than two decades, the Salzburg Academy has served as a global learning space where participants critically examine the role of media in democratic life. The Academy is known for its interdisciplinary approach, combining media studies, journalism, technology, civic engagement, and creative practice.

The 2026 edition deepens this mission by encouraging participants to understand media as both invention and inheritance a constantly evolving system shaped by past technologies, narratives, and power structures. The Academy’s theme draws inspiration from the concept of remediation, which highlights how new media continuously rework older forms. Familiar symbols, formats, and storytelling conventions migrate across generations of technology, carrying historical meaning into innovation.

Participants will explore how media histories across different regions have shaped storytelling, representation, and public discourse. At the same time, they will examine how future media systems can be designed to strengthen:
