THE STUDENT LEADERS MEETS THE VICE CHANCELLOR, MODIBBO ADAMA UNIVERSITY, YOLA - OVER STUDENTS WELFARISM


The Executives of the SUG and SRA had a scheduled meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Liman Tukur, around 9:30 AM today, 15th November, 2021.


The meeting, which also included the presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Dean of Students' Affairs, lasted for over an hour and was in regards to the students and general wellbeing.

The President, SUG began by commending the VC on his unrelenting effort in seeing that the university is brought to standard, and then outlined the purpose of visit and pleaded the VC to heed to the students request.

The Speaker, SRA then continued by outlining the various needs of students to the VC reinstating that the students welfare is of outmost importance, pinpointing out various issues that needed urgent attention.

The VC in an opening statement commended the Executives for taking the step to meet him on these matters. He began by saying that as leaders, reading and reasoning should be part of our everyday lives and it doesn't matter what we are studying, there is need for diversification.

The VC then said he has been working tirelessly to add courses to the already added conventional courses, saying quality and appropriate education is the right of every child of this great country.

Replying to the listed problems brought to his notice:

1) Rehabilitation of Health Centre: The school recently employed a number of health officers at the clinic and is working to see that the clinic is rehabilitated and in great condition.

2) Water scarcity: Those in charge were told to employ plumbers, even from outside, to work on the water scarcity issues. 

3) Hostel blockage: The management has also been working on the stagnant water in the females hostel but said The attitudes of students in regards to the maintenance is poor. He emphasized that the females should help by properly dumping waste, and stop littering into the passages

4) Electricity: The school management has been on its toes seeing how to curtail blackouts even though the cost of electricity is getting higher. The ideas of Solar Energy Project is on the way.

Regarding the LTs, he emphasized that the management will see and inspect all issues regarding the electricity.

5) Closed water gate and security: The porosity of the school compound will make the school less secured and said students shouldn't be lazy in adding some steps to the primary school gate. Light stamps within the campus will be increased to prevent robbery and also increase safety. Also students should read in the reading rooms allocated.

6) The Highway: The VC said he gets nightmares seeing students in the night on that road. The shoulder of the road has been bad and he has been on it since, interfacing constantly with the engineers concerned, seeing it is not just a domestic project but that of the Federal Government.

The erosion beside the secondary school is still a matter of concern saying unknown agents could enter through reducing safety.

7) Students Discipline and Conduct: He has set up a committee to see how students discipline is enforced to tame students before they graduate. He added that students should report in case of lecturers not coming to classes, also to be bold to review marks after examination in case of Failures, expose people cheating and enhance harmony.

8) Social activities: He said those in charge should write out steps needed to bring back social activities, emphasizing that he is ready to consider.

The Dean of Students' Affairs said the students should write to remind regarding issues and not just calls. Students should talk to Senators, the Senators to talk to Hall Officers and then the Officers to Him before he channels it to the Management.


The DVC then addressed the house and said leadership is not easy and we should be ready for all things. He also added that the primary reason is to be  students and we should concentrate on studies.


The VC, in conclusion, thanked all present and admonished that all take responsibilities serious and see it as a part of learning. No one should abuse the opportunity given, saying God demands accountability.

He further said we should support the management and ensure that there is peace within the students of the university.
