FCTA Sanctions N7 Billion Allocation to Settle Unsettled Salaries of Primary School Educators in Abuja_

The Secretary for Education in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, has officially announced the allocation of N7 billion to cover 25% of the outstanding salary arrears owed to teachers in public primary schools.

Dr. Hayyo made this declaration during a visit to the management of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing the commitment to addressing the financial challenges faced by teachers.

Under this approved plan, the FCTA is set to bear 40% of the overdue arrears, while the remaining 60% will be the responsibility of the Area Councils. Dr. Hayyo underscored that both the Area Councils and the FCT have been mandated to complete the payment within a three-month timeframe. The funds, he specified, will be deducted at the source and promptly remitted to the respective entities.

The primary objective of this visit, as articulated by Dr. Hayyo, is to foster collaboration between the secretariat and the Board in achieving their shared mandate. Expressing gratitude for the Board's counterpart funding and the resources from UBEC and UBEB, he assured that these would be utilized to address the prevailing challenges.

Dr. Hayyo also brought attention to the persistent shortage of teachers despite having a board overseeing more than 1000 schools. He indicated that the administration is actively studying these challenges to formulate effective solutions.

In his welcome address, Dr. Alhassan Sule, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT Universal Basic Education, provided additional insights. He highlighted the nine departments and four critical units within the board and detailed efforts to promote girl child education through initiatives like the establishment of Ako Girls’ Secondary School. Dr. Sule also informed the Education Secretary about the collaborative efforts with NGOs aimed at enhancing the development of schools in the FCT.
