LAGOS, Nigeria — Leading indigenous energy company Seplat Energy Plc has announced a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s energy landscape, revealing that it has installed more than 850 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas infrastructure across the country to meet domestic gas supply demands.

The announcement was made by the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Samson Ezugworie, during a press briefing held on Sunday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The milestone marks a significant step in Seplat’s long-term strategy to combat energy poverty and drive sustainable development across Nigeria.

Powering Nigeria’s Future: Over 850MMscfd in Gas Infrastructure

Speaking to journalists, Ezugworie emphasized Seplat’s dedication to building a robust gas infrastructure network that caters to homes and industries nationwide.

“Over the years, we’ve installed over 850MMscfd of gas infrastructure aimed at supplying domestic users across the country,” he stated.

He clarified that this figure excludes the gas potential from Seplat’s recent acquisition of assets from Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU), which is expected to unlock further opportunities within Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves.

MPNU Acquisition Set to Expand Gas Output

Seplat’s acquisition of MPNU assets presents a new growth trajectory. According to Ezugworie, plans are underway to harness the untapped gas potential of the MPNU portfolio, using it to expand power delivery and industrial energy use across Nigeria.

“We intend to utilise a significant portion of this gas to further power homes and industries across Nigeria,” he added.

This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s agenda to boost domestic gas utilization and transition towards a cleaner energy future.

Sustainability at the Core of Seplat’s Strategy

Ezugworie underlined that Seplat’s operations are deeply rooted in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, with sustainability being a central focus.

“Building a sustainable business requires vision, even when benefits are not immediately visible to today’s generation,” he remarked.

As part of its capacity-building efforts, Seplat has enrolled 50 fresh graduates into its graduate development programme, providing comprehensive training across technical and leadership disciplines to prepare them for the future energy workforce.

Ending Routine Flaring: Seplat’s Commitment to Emission Reduction

Seplat Energy is also making significant strides toward eliminating routine gas flaring, a major source of carbon emissions in oil and gas operations. The company’s End of Routine Flaring (EORF) roadmap includes:

These projects are designed to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, boost operational efficiency, and support Nigeria’s climate commitments.

“At full capacity, the Sapele plant will significantly cut our Group’s Scope 1 emissions,” Ezugworie revealed.

Seplat aims to end routine flaring across all its onshore assets by H2 2025, setting a benchmark for the Nigerian energy sector.
